Orewa take out top honours at Northern Regional Champs 25 + 26 February 2017.
Orewa Surf Lifesaving Club continue to build on their sporting success with a very convincing win at the Northern Region Surf Lifesaving Championships held at Omaha Beach 25 & 26February.
Orewa SLSC secured a massive 235 points, 51 points ahead of second place Red Beach. Points were accumulated across the boat, canoe, beach and surf craft arenas with athletes ranging from under 16 year olds to Masters competitors.
Whilst there were many impressive individual performances, it was the collective effort of the Teams that really shone for the Club. The Lifesaver Relay – an exciting multi-discipline and multi age group event – was a real highlight. Orewa took out both the Gold and Bronze medal placing’s which demonstrated the depth of skills and capability the Club has built.
Top honours in the boat arena went to the U23 Mens team - The Chargers and the U19 Womens crew – The Baby Blues – who took out Gold medals in both the long and short course boat races. The U23 Womens crew – The Aces – also enjoyed a great day at the beach with a Gold in short course and the Silver in the long course.
In the beach and craft arenas, the Club were awarded 16 Team golds and another 16 individual gold medals. Lucy Makaea and Ella Drinnan each took home an impressive 3 individual golds, with James Scott & Eve Thomas each taking out 2 individual gold medals. Brandon Pearson, Hamish Lockie, Annelise Lockie, Levi Ata, Jack Wilson and Cole Drinnan also all secured individual gold medals.
Interim Head Club Ben Parker couldn’t be prouder of the efforts of the Orewa SLSC team. “I am extremely proud with how the squad raced this weekend at Omaha. Everyone really stepped up for their teammates and their club and the results speak for themselves” Parker went on to add“Club spirit is at an all time high and I am really excited for the upcoming Nationals championships”. Parker also acknowledged the role that all the supporters of the Orewa SLSC play at events like this saying that “this result couldn’t have been achieved without them”. Back to news archives
