Life membership awarded to Mark (doc) Johnston
Mark joined the club as a Junior parent in the early 2000s and immediately became immersed in the club as a coach, manager and administrator in the Junior section.
During his time with the club his contribution cannot be understated and he has crammed a lot of work into his time with us. His children have left the club, but Doc is still here helping us save lives.
A lot of his work goes largely unnoticed, but there will be few, if any, younger lifeguards, who have not been influenced by Doc.
Doc has been a Junior coach for 13 years and our Rookie Coordinator for 15 straight years. It would be interesting to count up how many life guards he has taught over the years, but it would be several hundreds.
He was a Board member from 2008 to 2011 and still sits on two of our operational committees – Juniors and Lifesaving.
Adding to this, he has been an Instructor since 2010 and regional examiner for the last 6 years.
He gained his lifeguard award in 2006 and has been an active lifeguard since and become one of our most experienced patrol captains.
He has been a regional Surf Official for the last 10 years.
He holds service awards from both Surf Lifesaving Northern Region and Surf Lifesaving New Zealand as well as a Distinguished Service Award from Surf Lifesaving Northern Region.
Another back bone member of our club, Doc’s presence at any club event, working bee, fundraiser, etc is taken as a given – but not for granted.
We are proud to have him as our latest Life Member.
