World games selection for ella
Local Surf Lifesaver Ella Drinnan has been selected to represent New Zealand as part of the team travelling to Wroclaw, Poland for the 2017 World Games in July. The World Games is a multi-sport event, last held in Columbia in 2013 which has 27 official sports and four invitational sports featured in the upcoming games and will see New Zealand compete against teams from Australia, Belgium, China, Germany, Italy, Japan, Poland and Spain.
Ella forms part of a team of 10 New Zealand athletes competing in the Lifesaving component, which is a pool based competition. This is a tremendous achievement for Ella, who is a member of the Orewa Surf Lifesaving Club, and follows her selection to the New Zealand Development squad announced at the conclusion of the SLSNZ National Championships in Christchurch in March this year. At just 17 years old, Ella will be one of the youngest in the New Zealand Team and will be part of a team of top NZ lifesaving athletes, including two Black Fins from the 2016 Lifesaving World Championship team.
Selection to the New Zealand team is a significant achievement for Ella who has been active in Surf lifesaving since she was 9 years old. “I am very excited to be selected to represent New Zealand, it has been a goal I wanted to achieve for a while. It will be a great experience” says Ella.
In the official announcement made on Friday, SLSNZ Sports Manager Mike Lord stated that “this Team is an exciting mix of skill and experience and it will be a great opportunity for them to make an impression on an international stage as they will all be pushing for a place in the teams for Rescue 2018 (2018 Lifesaving World champs)”.
Ella will be training hard between now and July in preparation of her making her mark on the world stage. Good luck Ella – we will all be behind you!
