Surf Life Saving Northern Region Awards of Excellence 2010
Orewa won the prestigious Competition Club of the Year at the Northern Region awards of Excellence on Saturday. Orewa’s consistency and all round strength across all surf sports disciplines this year were key factors in winning the award. Orewa’s Head Coach Andrew Towns attributes the clubs success to the emergence of their beach sprint squad and some outstanding results from the boat arena. “We’ve continued to be successful in the board and ski arena, but our sprinters and boaties stepped up, giving us strength right across the beach.
The U14 Sportsman was taken out by Adam Parker. Adam’s exceptional season included being named the U14 Northern Region Team Captain and winning 9 medals, including 7 gold at this year’s District Championships.
Luke Siddins won the U16 Sportsman of the Year following a stellar season which saw him named U16 Northern Region Team Captain and winning 10 medals including 5 gold at this year’s District Championships. At the National Championships, Luke won a silver and bronze medal.

The highlight of Rachel’s season was being named in Surf Life Saving New Zealand Team to compete at this year’s World Championships in Alexandria, Egypt.
Wayne Franich, the current Orewa club President was named Surf Official of the Year for his work as carnival controller for Northern Region and as well is an arena referee at NZ level. Wayne also is a member of the Northern Region Sport Operations Committee.

Orewa Ironwoman set to take on the world (16/4/10)
On Thursday night Surf Life Saving New Zealand named a 12 person team to contest this year's World Championships in Alexandria, Egypt. One of the new faces in this year’s team is Orewa Surf Life Saving Club’s star ironwoman, Rachel Clark.
Rachel’s selection in the team caps off 2 years of strong performances, including the 2009 Nationals where she won the Under 19 and Open Ironwoman double and was named the top competitor at the championships.
Orewa’s club coach Andrew Towns, says that Rachel adds flexibility and all round skills to the team who will compete in pool life saving disciplines as well as surf life saving disciplines. ‘Athletes are selected in the team based on their strength at either pool or surf events. Rachel will compete in both as she is likely to race in the surf ski, ironwoman and surf swim in the surf component as well as playing a key role in the pool events’.
Rachel has demonstrated her ability to manage her time effectively in training for the multi disciplined ironwoman event as well as the very technical pool events. She is a very coachable athlete with an elite work ethic says Towns.
It is the first time in Orewa SLSC’s history to have an athlete selected in a team to compete at the World Championships. Club Chairman John Chapman says Orewa is proud of Rachel’s selection in the team. ‘She is a great ambassador for our club and a great role model for all young lifesavers. We can’t wait to see her take on the world’.
The World Championships run from October 2-17. More than 3000 athletes will contest the pool events in the Olympic Swimming Pool of Alexandria and the surf events will take place on Mamoura Beach.

Rachel Clarke and Teneale Hatton Selected in New Zealand Squads (18/3/10)
Rachel Clarke and Teneale Hatton capped off successful seasons by being named in the Senior New Zealand Squad for 2010-11. Rachel has also been named in the revised squad for this year’s World Championships Team who will compete in Egypt. She will compete at the final selection pool trials next month before the final team will be announced.
Congratulations Ladies!

Teneale Hatton begins competing at the Australian Championships today (18/3/10)
Teneale Hatton dons her Kurrawa SLSC colours today to battle cyclone swells on the Gold Coast. Teneale is Orewa’s only athlete contesting the Australian Championships this year and she will have to contend with huge seas being generated by Cyclone Thomas. News footage of yesterday’s Masters Championships showed surf boats and surf skis being battered and broken and the surf report is for similar conditions for the duration of the championships.
Teneale has had a successful 2 weeks after being named in Canoe Racing New Zealand’s Senior National Team and Surf Life Saving New Zealand’s Senior Squad for 2010 and produced top form at Ohope last weekend winning the Open Single Ski Championship. This weekend she will attempt to avenge her loss in the Open Single Ski at last year’s Australian Championships – where she led the whole race only to broach just before the finishing line and finished 3rd. You can track Teneale’s progress by following the links to the championships page from www.slsa.asn.au
Good luck Teneale!

Zac Fanich and Sam Wilson named in CRNZ U23 Team (18/3/10)
Orewa surf ski paddlers Zac Franich and Sam Wilson have enjoyed successful seasons in both surf and in flat water kayaking, highlighted by their recent selection in CRNZ’s 4 man U23 Team. The team will compete at the European U23 Championships which will be held in Bochum Germany in June.
Zac and Sam have followed in the footsteps of many elite ski paddles that have made the transition from surf ski paddling into sprint kayaks, including Orewa club mates Teneale Hatton and Rachel Clarke who have represented New Zealand in the past 2 years.
Congratulations Men!

Surf League Teams announced
Rachel Clarke and Teneale Hatton have been selected for the Northern Region Surf League team – both Under 19 and Open age groups for the surf League being contested at Mt Maunganui on February 7th and 8th 2009.

Under 16 Interdistricts Team
After some excellent form at recent carnivals, 6 Orewa athletes have been rewarded with selection in the Under 16 Interdistricts Team to represent Northern Region at the national Interdistricts competition being held at Mt Maunganui on 31st January and 1st February.

Congratulations to:
Tom Clarke
Andrew Saunders
Luke Siddins
Amie Sisson
Julie Sweetman
Jack Wilson

The team is coached by Andrew Towns and Managed by Dave Shanks.

Orewa has 6 of the 10 places in the team reflecting the Club’s dominance so far this year in the Under 16 age group.

Trans Tasman Team Selection

Congratulations to the following who have been selected in the Northern Region team to compete in a 3 test series against New South Wales in early January:
Aimie Sisson (U16)
Luke Siddins (U16)
Tom Clarke (U16)
Andrew Saunders (U16)
Laura Leeson (U19)
Georgia Butt (Open)
Rachel Clarke (Open)

The team is coached by Andrew Towns and the Manager is Wayne Franich.
Orewa has 7 of the 18 spots in the team and our strong representation is a reflection of some excellent results from the first 4 interclub carnivals of the year.
For the first time ever, we have representatives in all 3 age groups which reflects that the club now has a balance of athletes across all age groups.
The quality of our Under 16 athletes coming through from the Junior divisions is highlighted with 3 first year competitors selected.
